What are her/your exercises? This question has come up a lot over the years! From such diverse sources as Taylor Swift's Mom and Jenna Wall's choir director. Not an easy question to answer because I work sooo much in the moment! But, I DO draw from patterns in specific sequences developed over the past 60 years.

This Interval Chart is an easy to read 'visual', showing at a glance that my 'exercises' procede from 'larger' intervals of a 5th and 4th to smaller intervals of major and minor 3rds(in triad format) and then 5ths, 4ths, 3rds are combined in both traditional and non-traditional arpeggios. And finally we come to short 'scale' exercises using the smallest intervals, whole and half steps! In addition, I include indications of direction, descending being most prevalent in the beginning and ascending peppered in as we advance!

All of the Interval exercises in this Interval chart are developed from the Chromatic Vowel Chart. In my teacher Dan Marek's words "The great contribution of Dr. Berton Coffin to the vocal art was a method of notating register events, pitch, and vowel color in the same exercise".

There are 18 available degrees of opening of each register and a 12 register system that forms the singing voice in total. Switching registers is done like yodeling and the yodeling can be done from the same degree of opening in one register to the same degree of opening in another register. Classic Bel Canto training states the wider the yodel the more freeing it is on the larynx. I have integrated this information over the years to develop efficient vocal exercises. The muscular adjustments necessary for the wider intervals are easier to achieve in the early stages of this training process. This is why we start with larger intervals versus traditional scale passages. More on vowel choices at a later date.
